(Laws always come in threes.)
Andre's 1st Law of Biology: Law of Meh — Whatever crazy idea you can come up with, there's some organism out there doing it. In fact, there is some organism that is dependent on it. (e.g., brown-coloured mushrooms can use ionizing radiation, specifically gamma and cosmic rays, as an energy source, there is a sea slug that can become photosynthetic by eating algae and stealing their chloroplasts and the genes required to maintain them)
Andre's 2nd Law of Biology: Law of Argh — If x is some low-frequency event, x happens when you don't want it and doesn't happen when you do. x includes recombination, pathway cross-talk, mutation, plasmid loss, inactivation/loss of a marker.
Andre's 3rd Law of Biology: Law of Guh — No matter how justified and reasonable your preconceptions are, they will be wrong. Evolution produces things that are easy for evolution to produce. They don't always make logical sense; they aren't always robust; they aren't always efficient. They are as robust as they forced to be; they are as efficient as they need to be; logic has no meaning to evolution.
