The Bioinformatics Nature[Short URL]

Bioinformatics is kind of like looking for a needle in a haystack. However, computers make it fast enough to actually get output. In general, you find one of three things:

  1. Nothing.
  2. A stack of needles. A needlestack if you like.
  3. A bunch of straight pins or knitting needles or something that looks close, but isn't.

Such is bioinformatics.

At BIBM09, one of the speakers mentioned that we previously were looking for needles in haystacks; now that many genomes are becoming available for computational analysis, we are really looking at finding haystacks in haystacks.

Your needlestack comment reminded me of that.
