Recipes comes from existing recipes by slowly modifications that are advantageous to being made again and being passed on. Hmm. Sounds like evolution. The next logical setp would be to construct a phylogeny of baked goods. And so it was done.
Interestingly, pasta seemst to fit into the heirarchy even though it is not (usually) baked. Brownies are a degenerate kind of chocolate cake that lack the quintessential levening quality of their group. There is a lot of horizontal filling tranfer in the pie-like group, making that unclear. Muffins and creamed cakes (marked with a *) are descended from the gluten-utilising group, but do not take advantage of gluten. In fact, there are extra steps to make them not form gluten.
