Bread Cutting Jig

I love my home-made bread, but making even slices that fit into a toaster is difficult. My friend bought a bow knife that has a blade and a stop so that the slices are always the same thickness. The down sides are that it was over-priced and the blade was lousy compared to my J.A. Henckels bread knife. The solution was to create a jig that allows me to slice bread evenly.

Construction was pretty simple. It basically consists of some square hardwood dowel, some round dowel, and some rare-earth magnets. After taking a tape measure to the toaster, bread slices should be between three quarters and one inch. The dowel is poplar and, rather than paint it, I treated it with mineral oil. A diagram of how this all works is shown below.

Now, there are slices of equal thicness. Total cost was about 10$, but I had a lot of excess dowel. If you plan to build this, test whether your knife is magnetic before you build this.
